Bigger, Badder and Better than ever!
The Real Girls of Rock Kick Off Summer with Preview Shows in Connecticut, New Jersey and Long Island!!

June 30, 2008 -- NEW YORK – Revved up and chock full of amplified energy, the 2008 Girls Rock & Girls Rule tour (GRGR) is pumped and ready to roll! GRGR, the premiere NYC organization dedicated to showcasing the best and hardest rockin’ independent femmes, kicks things off this summer with three stellar live preview events – featuring some of your favorites from the past plus a bunch of great new gal-infused bands.

GRGR will kick off the season July 31st at Café Nine in New Haven, CT followed by two more smokin’ events on August 1st at Tierney’s Tavern in Montclair, NJ, and September 6th at Munchaba Lounge in Levittown, NY – bringing to the stage your GRGR favorite NYC core bands G-spot, Loki the Grump, RewBee and Marisa Mini & The Underage Hotties back to the stage. Even more exciting in ‘08 is the debut of new core band America’s Sweetheart, a garage-indie powerhouse that packs a mean punch with luscious, layered guitars and sweet vocal harmonies (think Sonic Youth meets The Breeders).

Following GRGR tradition these shows will also feature some fired-up, local favorites that give new meaning to the term “chick rock.” Preview-show performers bringing down the house include GRGR alumni favorites and some hot new additions: Jan Loe, New Day Dawn and Infernophonic ( New Jersey), Joanie Loves Tchotchkes (Connecticut) and The Rosies, Dormitory Effect and All Out Riot (Long Island).

Each night will offer audiences an entire evening of awesome music for just $8, the admission is a tax-deductible donation and includes raffle tickets for cool prizes and giveaways. There will also be drink specials from our sponsors Rolling Rock and Fuze, plus audience members can even sign up to win their very own guitar from Daisy Rock! Girls Rock & Girls Rule will continue its mission of giving back and supporting the next generation of girls who rock through its ongoing partnership with Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls. The Brooklyn, NY-based camp receives a portion of the proceeds from each event.

And this is only the beginning! This summer’s shows are just a sneak peak of the GRGR’s second, ragin’ multi-city East Coast Tour, which kicks off Oct. 3 with back-to-back shows in Washington, DC; Norfolk, VA, Raleigh, NC, Spartanburg, SC, Tucker, GA; Nashville, TN; Cincinatti, OH; Pittsburgh, PA, and Baltimore, MD.

About Girls Rock & Girls Rule:

The time has come for a platform that will bring attention to all the fantastic women who are making the kind of music people want to hear. These are not re-touched pop princesses or radio clones. They are unique, original and ready to show the world just how hard they can rock! For the past seven years Girls Rock & Girls Rule has established itself as the premium organization dedicated to promoting and showcasing the hottest, upcoming and established female rockers on the music scene. As GRGR continues to grow, its mission is the same as it’s always been: to create awareness and exposure for independent female rock artists while helping women and girls in the community. This year’s tour will feature more than 25 bands -- groovin´ on everything from pop-rock, to punk, to metal to hardcore.

GRGR would not be possible without the help of sponsors and contributors, including Rolling Rock, Fuze, Airplay Direct, Daisy Rock, D’Addario, Jakprints, Noisy Planet, Sam Ash, Shure, and Sonicbids as well as our local media partners; WBAB 102.7, WRAT 95.9, Steppin’ Out and the New Haven Advocate.

About Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls:

Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls was founded in 2004 and is a New York City-based non-profit summer day camp serving girls ages 8-18. The program offers girls the chance to learn how to play musical instruments, write songs, perform and generally "rock out" in a supportive environment that fosters self-confidence, self-esteem, creativity, tolerance and collaboration. The camp is named after Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton, a blues and rock performer/songwriter who was one of the first women to play the music that came to be known as "rock n´ roll." The camp grew out of the Portland, Oregon-based program Rock n´ Roll Camp for Girls, which was founded in 2000. (www.williemaerockcamp.org)

Girls Rock And Girls Rule, an annual all-female rock tour organized by Revolutionary Records, will hold a benefit concert February 9 at Hank's Saloon in Brooklyn to support an East Coast 2008 jaunt. The fundraiser will feature all four core acts for this year's tour—the anti-folk stylings of Marisa Mini, new wavers RewBee, bubblegum punks Loki the Grump, straight-ahead femme-rockers G-spot—as well as new acts Swati and Americas Sweetheart.

"We need a kick start so that we can keep this thing going," says Girls Rock And Girls Rule founder Gail Silverman, who also moonlights as the lead singer of G-spot. "We're excited about the show. We like to bring in new bands as much as we can and give them that exposure."

The tour began as a one-time event in 2002, but by 2007 Girls Rock And Girls Rule was showcasing over 35 female musicians in 12 cities. "It's been incredibly empowering," says Silverman, who also heads Revolutionary Records. "A lot of the bands who are involved in it haven't toured before."

As if that weren't inspiring enough, Girls Rock And Girls Rule donates a portion of its proceeds each year to non-profit organizations that help women and girls. Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls, a summer day camp in New York that teaches girls ages eight to 18 how to rock out while fostering tolerance and self-esteem, was last year's beneficiary.

In her teens, Gail Silverman spent hours in her bedroom rocking out to her first 45. She stood in front of a mirror, hairbrush in hand, pretending to be live on stage belting it out. Now years later, Chelsea resident Silverman tosses back her long magenta streaked mane revealing her silver studded ears as she recalls the chance inception of her band, G-spot, a decade ago. She was singing along with the musicians in Washington Square Park one day when a scruffy young man approached her. “Oh are you a singer?” he asked. “Well, I sing, and write some songs,” Silverman demurred. It turned out he was a drummer looking to start a band. Silverman was very nervous before her first show at the New Music Cafe, so she compensated with a high-energy performance that became her signature style.

After years of performing, however, Silverman grew frustrated with the music outlook for women. The “rock, punk, and pop” music G-spot was playing, heavily influenced by Joan Jett, Janis Joplin, and Led Zeppelin, didn’t fit in with the “folkie girls with guitars” who pervaded the Manhattan music scene. “I love that stuff, but it wasn’t what I was singing, and it wasn’t what a lot of people I knew were doing in other bands around the city. I wanted to create something more about rock,” said Silverman. She made it her mission to give female rockers a chance to perform together and support each other. In 2002 she started her own label, Revolutionary Records, and released her first album “Experience the Pleasure.” Six years ago, Silverman started Girls Rock & Girls Rule, a showcase for women rockers and a fundraiser for female related charities. The first GRGR show was held at the now closed legendary Lower East Side lesbian club Meow Mix. The second GRGR was a benefit for Voices of Women, the Battered Women’s Resource Center, and Habitat for Humanity’s Women & Girl Build Programs. Since then they have raised $6,000 for women’s charities. The sixth GRGR show, this Friday night, is a benefit for Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls, a nonprofit weeklong summer day camp, which teaches girls ages 8-18 to play instruments, write rock songs, and perform them in a supportive environment.

“Girls Rock & Girls Rule is totally my religion,” says Rewbee, a rock singer who has performed with GRGR since 2004. Rewbee, who is “old enough to have two teenage daughters,” sports heavy eyeliner, glittery lips and purple nail polish. She raved in a throaty voice about the most recent GRGR east coast tour where local female rock bands were invited to play along with the four core GRGR bands: G-spot, Loki the Grump, Marisa Mini, and RewBee. “I fit in nowhere in life, and there I fit in there so well. Everyone gets along really well — and it’s not a normal thing. I have other female artist friends, and when I said we were [playing] nine cities in nine nights, they were like, With girl bands? I could never do that.” Girl bands are assumed to be catty and difficult, especially in packs. GRGR obviously disproves this stereotype. This year 35-plus bands were able to have some exposure via GRGR. The tour is also the subject of a documentary by filmmaker Peter Vaughan, Silverman’s brother-in-law, to be released in 2008.

Both Rewbee and Silverman note the similarities between GRGR and the Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls, which was launched in New York City in 2004 by executive director Karla Schickele. GRGR, says Rewbee, is “a grown up Willie Mae, we just don’t have the building blocks.” Silverman was inspired to raise money for Willie Mae Rock Camp, named for Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton, one of the first female blues/rock singers, two years ago during her first time volunteering at the camp.
Silverman was a band coach for two summers in a row and sang lead in the volunteer band last summer. She loved teaching there and knew she wanted to help raise money for the young rockers. “We [GRGR] are the next generation of girls making music,” says Silverman. Rewbee started volunteering last summer as well, and LaFrae Sci, G-spot’s drummer for the last GRGR, is on the advisory board of the camp. Sci also runs the Willie Mae After school Program, whose band, the Willie Mae Camper Band will open this week’s GRGR show.

Willie Mae is “more than music,” says Rewbee. “It’s about empowerment and confidence building, they teach you about business, and merchandizing. I wish I had a Willie Mae growing up.” The emphasis at Willie Mae isn’t necessarily about becoming a rock star, says Silverman, “It’s like you are a rock star when you are there.” The girls pick their own instruments provided by the camp and write a song from any genre they chose – anything from hip-hop, to punk, to salsa — but, notes Silverman, “none of them sing sweet songs.” Compared to Silverman’s five years of sleep away camp, Willie Mae seems like a completely different experience. At Willie Mae, the counselors go out of their way to foster an inclusive atmosphere and to avoid cliquishness. “I don’t know if we made every girl happy,” said Silverman, “but we sure as shit try.”

The campers certainly seem thrilled at the chance to perform in GRGR. This Friday, November 30 at Nolita’s Ace of Clubs, The Willie Mae Camper Band, featuring eight teens including Ariella Van Couten, 16, will open the GRGR benefit for Willie Mae Rock Camp with four songs, including one Bollywood inspired number sung entirely in Hindi. Van Couten, who had Silverman as a band coach for the past two summers at Willie Mae, characterizes her mentor like a true rock ’n’ roller: “Gail was totally awesome — that’s the only way to describe her.”
Six years ago musician Gail Silverman, tired of watching her fellow female rockers sitting on the sidelines, started her own record label, Revolutionary Records and a concert series called Girls Rock and Girls Rule (GRGR). What started out as just a one gig event has grown into a sort of small-scale hard rock Lilith Fair, with a rotating line-up of local musicians joining a roster of headliners whose tour this year has taken them through 12 cities. Part of the proceeds from the shows goes to support the Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls, a New York City-based non-profit summer day camp that gives girls the chance to learn how to play musical instruments, write their own songs, perform, and learn different genres of music. Tonight the GRGR tour concludes with a 6th anniversary show at Ace of Clubs (9 Great Jones St.); the Willie Mae Rock Camp Band play their debut set to kick off the party, which starts at 7pm.

What is the Girls Rock and Girls Rule tour? GRGR was created to support independent music and provide a forum for girls who truly know how to rock! It is intended to give female musicians in the harder rock genres some much needed exposure and provide a platform for all the fantastic talent not having their voices heard, while also benefiting women and girls in the community. It began 6 years ago as an annual event and has in the past two years as grown into a full blown tour.

Are you one of the performers? Yes, my band's name is G-spot.

What kind of music is it? It is rock/punk/pop and whatever other weird stuff I try to throw in at different times.

Please share the most memorable experience from this tour so far. There are several – but I think it is the strength of the bond that was fostered on the tour between the 4 core bands that traveled together. The leads of the bands Marisa Mini, Rew and Michele Jaffe from Loki the Grump also helped me organize the tour this year – even though we are all very different we really complement each other both musically and organizationally. The entire tour team was fantastic. And of course just getting to play music every night is a different city is amazing as well. Also there was this one time when we were driving from Elmira to Ithaca in the late afternoon and it was rainy and sunny at the same time and we saw a double full rainbow that was pretty fantastic!

What motivated you to start this organization? When I started GRGR 6 years ago there were several organizations supporting women in music but they were more focused on the singer/songwriter and although I participated in some of them I didn’t necessarily feel that there was a place for my band and other heavier female rock bands that I knew. Also there is a real lack of exposure for women doing harder rock in radio, TV etc. Yet there are tons of very talented female artists doing everything from rock to punk to metal to hardcore and you just don’t see them getting recognized like their male counterparts.

What challenges do female recording artists face when dealing with the music industry? The industry just doesn’t seem to want to recognize women doing heavier rock music and take any risks, artists are often not encouraged to be themselves – although I think this applies to music in general not just women. The music industry likes to play it safe and it’s about looks and image and not necessarily talent and originality. It’s a tough market; overall the business is changing and there are a lot of new opportunities with the internet etc. But it’s also very fragmented so the challenge is to break through the clutter, which we try to accomplish that with GRGR. This year’s tour featured over 35 bands in 12 cities and created a lot of buzz in the markets we were in.

Please tell us about the Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls. Founded in 2004, Willie Mae is a NYC based non-profit summer day camp serving girls aged 8-18. Offering girls the chance to learn how to play musical instruments, write songs, perform, learn about different types of music, and generally “rock out” in a supportive environment that fosters self-confidence, self-esteem, creativity, tolerance, and collaboration. I volunteered there two summers ago as a counselor and band coach. The experience was so positive and inspiring – it was a whole week of encouraging young women to express themselves, working together and being surrounded by music that I really felt it was a perfect fit with what we were doing.

What female musicians inspire you? Janis Joplin, Ani Difranco, Alanis Morrisette (when she first came out), Joan Jett, Tina Turner and some of the most inspiring are all the great indie females I’ve gotten to experience over the past 6 years through the events and tour.

What was the first venue you played in New York and what do you remember about that show? As a band it was New Music Café (which is now the Canal Room). I remember how much fun it was to totally rock out on stage with a full band and the great crowd we had. It was a total rush! Also our original drummer quit the band because I went ahead and booked us the gig through a friend of mine – turned out we were ready but he wasn’t – so we found someone new and got him up to speed only a few weeks before the show!

What was the worst gig you played and why? Also at New Music a few months later – my first lead guitarist refused to use a tuner and he went out of tune on stage and couldn’t get back in – I wasn’t that comfortable on guitar at that point and we had to play a song with just me, bass and drums while he tried to get in tune – he was pretty much out of tune the whole gig and we had a good crowd and a terrible gig! Oh well that’s the life of a musician!

What's your favorite place to hear live music in New York? I like Arlene’s Grocery a lot and it’s a great place to play as well. I have to confess there are a bunch new places and being so busy with the tour I haven’t had a chance to get out and see bands as much as I would like. Also we were just part of a show at a little hole in the wall called Hank’s Saloon in Brooklyn that had unexpectedly amazing sound!

What neighborhood do you live in? What are its pros and cons? Chelsea. I’ve been here a long time; it’s a great location but recently has really become overly gentrified. It's getting more and more crowded and expensive! I miss when it was a little grittier and not so trendy!

Who is your favorite New York City band these days? My fellow GRGR Core bands for sure – Rewbee, Marisa Mini and Loki the Grump – I also love my friend Collette’s band Edible Red.

If you could change one thing about New York what would it be? I’d lower the rents so artists can keep living here making New York what it’s always been – a mecca for artists and creativity with some edge!

Girls with guitars are all the rage in the music biz nowadays. Or are they?

"There was kind of a surge in the '90s where there seemed to be a lot of attention given to women - when Alanis and Sheryl Crow and that whole group came out. And then since then, I think it's really gone in the opposite direction," says Gail Silverman, lead singer of New York City hard rockers G-Spot.

"It's really become more about the pop and about the singer-songwriter," she adds.

Which is why Silverman - also known as the national sponsorship director of the Newport International Film Festival - started the Girls Rock & Girls Rule tour five years ago to remind audiences that real ladies do play hard. The estrogen-fueled tour roars into Newport Wednesday, Sept. 26, for a night of rocking and raging at the Newport Blues Cafe.

"There are women doing a lot of things in our genre that are certainly not being showcased commercially. We're really trying to bring some attention to that."

The tour features more than 25 bands performing in nine cities up and down the East Coast. There isn't a submission process for bands; Silverman relies heavily on word-of-mouth in musical communities.

"We have four core touring bands from New York that I have worked with for several years. And then we look for local bands in each market that are a good fit with the type of music that we're looking to do. The caliber of talent that we've gotten that way has been really great."

The Newport show will feature local acts Beyond Blonde and The Lydia Warren Band. Also appearing besides G-Spot will be NYC bands Loki the Grump, RewBee, Marisa Mini and Emiko. They'll be playing to a crowd likely to be comprised of as many men as women. According to Silverman, crowds along the way have been about 50/50.

"I think that boys like to see girls rock out just as much as other girls do," she says.

A portion of the money raised will be donated to the Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls. The camp is designed to teach girls ages 8-18 about self-confidence through music.

"I thought that it was a really good fit for what we were doing - kind of bringing up the next generation of girls who rock," Silverman says. "It's really about empowering these girls and giving them the opportunity to really feel good about expressing themselves through music."

GRGR continues its mission of creating awareness and exposure for independent female artists while helping women in the community. The Girls Rock & Girls Rule Tour debuted this year and made multiple stops along the East Coast in NY, NJ, and PA. At each GRGR event Revolutionary Records partnered with artists and organizations to offer a fantastic evening of entertainment featuring a combination of local bands as well as artists from other cities that have participated in previous GRGR shows. This insures a strong local audience and gives bands an opportunity to gain exposure with new fans while offering local live music lovers some fresh new sounds they might not otherwise have had a chance to hear. Based on the success of the past NYC events and Gail Silverman, the founder’s, personal passion for music (an artist herself) the timing was definitely right to grow and expand. Given the positive and enthusiastic response from the bands, fans, and media it would seem she is on the right track! GRGR is set to become the premiere showcase for discovering the best female rockers on the scene today!

In addition to the showcases the Girls Rock & Girls Rule Documentary film is currently in production and scheduled for release in late spring 2007. The film will follow the tour, showcasing the live performances while taking you on a fascinating journey with today’s hardest rockin’ female musicians. Audiences will learn what it really means to be an independent female artist today, share their struggles and successes and have a chance to experience these ladies ragin’, rantin’, snarlin’ and screamin’ both on and off stage!

Given the challenging state of the music industry and the lack of female rockers on the forefront today, the time has come for a platform that will being attention to all the fantastic women who are making the kind of music people want to hear. These are not re-touched pop princesses or radio clones they are unique, original and ready to show the world they can rock as hard if not harder than their male counterparts!

Since 2002, V.O.W. has been providing the women of New York City with the opportunity to organize, develop their leadership skills and effect domestic violence policy. Survivors of domestic violence are given the training and support they need to influence, change and improve the systems that allow domestic violence to continue. “We are thrilled to once again be part of this exciting event where women musicians are lending their beautiful voices and talent to benefit our organization. Through these types of partnerships where women come together to help each other we can make a real difference in the lives of battered women and their children”, says Susan Lob, Director of the Battered Women’s Resource Center, which staffs VOW. About GRGR:

GRGR began as an annual event in December 2002, and has grown into a multi-city tour. This year’s tour doubled in size from year one and featured four core traveling bands from NYC and more than 35 female rockers in 12 different cities. GRGR stormed the Northeast in August and September – heading north from Washington, DC to DE, MD, PA, RI, MA and NY. Along the way, phenomenal femmes captivated audiences with their all-out live performances groovin´ on everything from pop-rock to punk, to metal to hardcore! As part of their mission GRGR donates a portion of proceeds to non profit organizations supporting women and girls. In 2007 GRGR benefited Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls and the funds raised and donated will be used to create a Girls Rock & Girls Rule scholarship that will send a girl to WMRC this coming summer as well as provide a guitar and amp for the camp.

The 2007 Girls Rock & Girls Rule Tour!

"What do you get when you put a bunch of kick-a#$ rock chicks together with a sense of purpose? You get a better world – or at the very least a good step towards one – with one great soundtrack" StephenBailey.com

For the past 5 years Girls Rock & Girls Rule has featured the best female rockers on the music scene and in 2007 they continue their mission of creating awareness and exposure for independent female artists while helping women and girls in the community.

This year’s tour is going to be bigger and better than ever when GRGR storms the Northeast with a lineup of phenomenal performer’s groovin´ on everything from pop-rock to punk to metal to hardcore! And today, GRGR is thrilled to give back to girl rockers in the making through its new partnership with Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls.

How will they do this? This year’s GRGR tour is hitting many more cities with artists who play harder than you could imagine. These girls like boys, they play with boys, but they are not “one of the boys” - each gal onstage is fierce, independent, and commands her band with passion and presence, playing songs of triumph, love, sex, politics, fun and freedom, bringing heart and their own unique viewpoint on whatever they happen to be singing about.

The 2007 Girls Rock & Girls Rule tour kicks off in late summer with two special preview shows; August 23 at Maxwell’s in Hoboken, NJ, and September 8 at Katie’s in Long Island. Then, GRGR hits the road for 10 days (from September 22-September 30). After an opening night at DC-9 in Washington, D.C., the GRGR Tour travels to Baltimore, DE, PA, MA, RI, and upstate NY before heading back home to Brooklyn, NY (see full tour schedule below). The shows feature GRGR bands from the past events including four core tour acts: G-spot, Loki the Grump, Marisa Mini and RewBee. These fiery damsels will be partnered in each city with local sister bands. This ensures a strong local audience and gives bands an opportunity to gain exposure with new fans while offering local live music lovers some fresh new sounds they might not otherwise have heard.

Bands that are currently scheduled to appear include: Edible Red, InfernoPhonic, The Catholic Girls, All Out Riot, Dormitory Effect, The Raygun Girls, The Rosies, Emiko, Esmirelda & The Tidbits, Olivia & the Housemates, Emiko, Semiblind, Soraia, Odd Girl Out, The Degenerettes, Shooting Ropes, Prima Donna, Spark is a Diamond, Beyond Blonde , The Lydia Warren Band, If Man Is Five, Pasco Roberts, Covin, Sanity is Chaos, The Turnaround, Silence Bleeds, Cootie Shot, Cheap Perfume, Royal Pink (formed at Ladies Rock Camp) and Luff.. In addition, there may be special guest appearances at select shows from Willie Mae Rock Camp camper bands and a portion of the proceeds from each event and from sponsors will be donated to Willie Mae.

Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls was founded in 2004 and is a New York City-based non-profit summer day camp serving girls aged 8-18. The program offers girls the chance to learn how to play musical instruments, write songs, perform, learn about different types of music, and generally "rock out" in a supportive environment that fosters self-confidence, self-esteem, creativity, tolerance, and collaboration.

In addition to the showcases, the Girls Rock & Girls Rule Documentary film is in post-production and scheduled for release in December 2007. It will premiere at the NYC 6th Anniversary showcase, but fans will have a chance to get a sneak peek at tour stops this fall.

Given the challenging state of the music industry, GRGR is on the cutting edge of the next trend in music bringing female rockers to the forefront today. The time has come for a platform that will bring attention to all the fantastic women who are making the kind of music people want to hear. These are not re-touched pop princesses or radio clones. They are unique, original and ready to show the world just how hard they can rock!

GRGR would not be possible without the help of sponsors, partners and contributors, GRGR thanks the following companies for their support of women and the independent music scene; Rolling Rock, Sam Ash, D’Addario, Jakprints, Gibson, Deepwave Studios, Bust Magazine, onlinegigs.com, JVC, and Lunabar.

Girls Rock!

4th Annual Girls Rock & Girls Rule Showcase and Benefit Features Top NYC and NJ Female Rockers

Gail Silverman, lead singer of the New York rock band, G-Spot, and creator of Revolutionary Records, inaugurated the first Girls Rock & Girls Rule event in 2002 to bring attention to independent female artists on the rock scene in the New York City area. Says Silverman, "By bringing these powerful artists together at one event, we are able to make some noise and create a buzz for the performers as well as expose them to new audiences." The 4th annual event, held in December 2005, once again featured some of the best female rockers New York City has to offer and proceeds benefited Voices of Women Organizing Project, Battered Women's Resource Center.
